A. Hak completed two intersects in two weeks in middle of Amsterdam

15 February 2016

As part of the contract with Nuon Noorderwarmte for its District Heating project in Amsterdam-Noord, the first and second pilot have successfully crossed the North Sea Canal in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The profile across this landmark waterway is running in parallel with the Coentunnel in the A-10 Motorway. As a consequence it is passing the grouted soil anchors that are retaining the tunnel walls. In order to minimise the drillfluid pressure, the ‘Meet-in-the-middle’ intersecting method was selected for this pilot, by drilling from both river shores towards the middle of it. With this radar-based technology, the sensors in the drill heads are able to detect each other, to finally ‘meet’. One drill head is then being pushed further, following the retracting other head.
Furthermore, the fluid and ground water pressures are being monitored continuously, in order not to endanger the integrity of the tunnel anchors. The measurements indicated that these pressures remained well under the set limits.
Upon completion of the subsequent reaming up to a diameter of 820 mm, the DN 400/600 Steel-in-Steel (SIS) insulated product pipe will be pulled in.
